Why Posture Matters

Bob and Brad, the self proclaimed “Most Famous Physical Therapists on the Internet” share everything you probably didn’t know about how something as simple as your posture can affect your health. As shown in the video below, having head-forward posture makes the next muscles work harder to hold your head up. Eventually, that posture puts a strain on the shoulder muscles as well and over time may result in limited arm mobility and a host of other problems all because of poor posture.

Bad Posture May Cause…

  1. Neck Headaches: as a result of too much pressure of the nerves in the neck.

  2. Neck Pain: your head weighs approximately 10 lbs, so when it’s not aligned with the spine it makes the neck muscles work a lot harder than they need to.

  3. Limited Shoulder Mobility: when the shoulders are rounded forward due to bad posture you won’t be able to lift your arm directly above your head anymore.

  4. Rotator Cuff Tear: when you lift your arm with rounded shoulder posture, you may be impinging the tendon in the shoulder, which can eventually lead to a rotator cuff tear.

  5. Shallow Breathing: bad posture hinders the diaphragm’s ability to stretch so you can take full, deep breaths. Anxiety and panic attacks can be caused by shallow breathing.

  6. Worsened Digestion: poor posture puts pressure on the stomach, small intestine and abdominal muscles, making it harder for those systems to do their jobs and digest food easily.
