Sometimes you just need a good calf stretch!
The calves can definitely have a tendency to be more on the tight side. Think about how often we use them throughout the day… Walking… Going up steps… Running… Jumping… The list goes on!
Knowing how to stretch them can be a great way to defeat any potential tightness or pain they may try to develop.
The primary calf muscle we’ll be targeting with this particular stretch is called the gastrocnemius.. It is one of the main muscles that makes up the calf.
While there are multiple ways you can stretch the calves, we’re focusing this week on a calf stretch with a strap.
You can practice this on your floor, couch or bed, depending on what you’re most comfortable with. Otherwise, all you’ll need is a non-elastic strap, such as the StretchStrap. If you don’t have a strap like this, then you can substitute with an alternative, such as a sheet, towel or dog leash.
Here we go!
Â
Step 1: Starting Position:
-
Position yourself in a seated position with the legs stretched out in front of you.
-
Loop your strap around the foot on the leg you intend to stretch.
-
Hold the opposite end of the strap in your hands.
-
Make sure to sit with a nice, upright posture.
Â
Step 2: Gastrocnemius Calf Stretch:
-
Using the strap, gentle pull the foot back, while keeping the knee straight.
-
Once you feel a gentle stretch, hold up to 30 seconds, then relax.
-
Repeat twice.
Easy enough!
Alternative position: If you’re more comfortable doing so, you can absolutely practice this same stretch in a chair. The stretching leg will still be extended out in front of you while you’re seated in the chair.
Here’s a video demonstrating, in case you need a closer look:

Feel free to practice this on both legs when you try it at home!
