  • This Study Takes A Stand On Shoulder Pulleys For Rehab

The Shoulder Pulley Study

There was a time when people wondered, “Are shoulder pulleys a safe and effective treatment for those with rotator cuff tears?”

Spoiler Alert: They’re both safe AND effective.

A study done by doctors at the University of South Dakota took a randomized, controlled sample of 53 patients that had undergone rotator cuff repair surgery. For this study, both groups started rehab six weeks after their operation, but half used shoulder pulleys while the other half did not.

A total of 27 patients who underwent rotator cuff repair were randomized to a rehabilitation group that used pulleys initiated 6 weeks postoperatively, and 26 patients followed a rehabilitation protocol without pulleys. The patients’ rehabilitation progress was evaluated using a pre-determined scoring method.

The results of the study showed that for those who used the pulleys, there was not any sort of negative impact on their rehabilitation.
